"I had previously experienced the thrill of having Secretariat look me in the eye in a one on one encounter, but this time was different. Here I was again by myself on a beautiful September morning photographing Big Red at Belmont Park on his way to the track, and I couldn't believe it when he turned his head and looked right at me. Most horses will pay little or no attention to a photographer or anyone while approaching the track for a workout. They already are in a zone and focused on one thing. But for Secretariat to turn his head and look directly at me while strutting along was something I had never experienced before or since."
