These original circa 1972-1974 press photos chronicled the happenings of Riva Ridge, Secretariat and the Meadow Stable team, who were the subjects for some of the biggest sporting news stories of the time.
The Press Photos offered below were generally photographs that were provided by an organization or individual as a service to media outlets to print for themselves. The copyright owner was allowing, and indeed encouraging, media outlets to reprint or publish the photo, especially in instances where the media outlet did not or could not send its own photographer.
A photo captured at a racetrack by the track photographer, or attending newspaper photographer, could be provided to local media, and beyond that, to a national wire service that served hundreds of media outlets throughout the country and the world. Historically, the wire service was a “cooperative” and its member media outlets were free to use images (and copy) that were distributed.
In the early 1970s, photo transmitters scanned images over a revolving drum that rotated at a consistent speed while a scanning beam moved slowly across the photo, scanning one line at a time. The image was then transmitted using a telephone line.
The vast majority of original press photos have been lost through the years, and we are delighted to exhibit and auction this special collection of very scarce historical artifacts in their originally transmitted news-worn condition with working press-markings and suggested captions and copy.
The individual photos from the the Press Photo Gallery collection below are now available for bidding on eBay. Auction closes tonight, Oct. 11 beginning at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
