  
Secretariat ushered in the first race of his 3-year-old season with an other fine performance in the $25,000 added Bay Shore Stakes on March 17, 1973. The world anxiously anticipated the return of Secretariat, the reigning 1972 Horse of the Year. And a more mature Secretariat resurfaced at Aqueduct racecourse as the "six million dollar man" after being syndicated for that record-breaking amount following the death of family patriarch Christopher Chenery in the beginning of the year. With all the expectations for a horse that actually was worth more than his weight in gold, Secretariat picked up where he left off. Despite being bumped, hemmed in, and encountering a multitude of adversity during the race, the Meadow Stable colt won the 7 furlong sprint by 4 1/2 lengths on a sloppy track.
The official winner's circle composite features a victorious mud-splattered Secretariat with bundled tail and jockey Ron Turcotte as they triumphantly overcame the wretched track conditions that day. Joining owner Penny Chenery and relieved trainer Lucien Lauren (note the cigarette still in hand) are groom Eddie Sweat holding the reins and a kneeling Charlie Davis - Secretariat's jovial exercise rider, as well as long-time Meadow Farm secretary Elizabeth Ham. Whitney Stone, President of the United States Equestrian Team makes the trophy presentation.
