1973 Marlboro Cup Program & Winning Ticket

The inaugural running of the Sept. 15, 1973, Marlboro Cup at Belmont Park was historic in several ways. First, the invitational race launched the concept of corporate sponsorship of sports -- a universal practice today. Secondly, the invitational race with the rich purse of $250,000 attracted an awe-inspiring field with newly anointed Triple Crown winner Secretariat facing a formidable field of older Grade I stakes winners, including Riva Ridge, his champion Meadow Stable barnmate in a rare meeting of Kentucky Derby winners; Cougar II, the 1972 champion older horse and winner of the 1973 Santa Anita Handicap; Kennedy Road, America's top grass horse and future turf champion; Onion, the unlikely conqueror of Secretariat in their previous meeting in the Whitney Stakes; Key to the Mint, the Rokeby Stable star and reigning 3-year-old champion; and Annihilate 'Em, the only other 3-year old in the race and impressive winner of the recent Travers Stakes. And finally, the race lived up to the hype with Secretariat's commanding victory over a very game Riva Ridge in an electrifying performance that established a new world record for the 1 1/8 mile distance.

Each of the rare uncashed $2.00 winning tote tickets offered in the pairing are in pristine mint condition and document Secretariat's entry number (2), race (seventh) along with the date and Belmont Park venue imprinted in blue. The official track programs are in near perfect condition as well, with each interior page crisp, bright and unmarked. Being the star attraction, the Marlboro Cup program featured Secretariat on the cover below the familiar red and white graphics of the Marlboro brand.

The star-studded interior entry page is a virtual who's who racing showcase comprised of five future Hall of Fame trainers (Lucien Laurin, Charlie Whittingham, Allen Jerkens, and Elliott Burch); with each horse in the entire field piloted by a Hall of Fame jockey including the Meadow Stable duo of Ron Turcotte and Eddie Maple and their five fellow riders: Bill Shoemaker, Jorge Velasquez, Angel Cordero and Don Pierce. Even the undercard was impressive featuring future three-time Horse of the Year Forego in the Solicitor Stakes and the great racemares Susan's Girl, Summer Guest, and Desert Vixen squaring off in the Beldame.

For the racing connoisseur, we are proud to offer the program with the double option of Mr. Turcotte's and Mr. Maple's hand-signed autograph on your choice of either the ticket or program. Original Secretariat programs and tote tickets have become increasingly hard to find and coveted even as individual pieces. This pairing is a wonderful and extremely limited opportunity to purchase both at once and add to any existing Secretariat memorabilia collection. Available on a first-come basis, but only while quantities last.

ONLY 2 PAIRS NOW AVAILABLE!

For those interested in the actual Chenery/Tweedy family's track-used Marlboro Cup program from day of the race within the Meadow Stable Archive collection, please inquire at information@Secretariat.com.
