In 1999, Secretariat became the first thoroughbred to be honored with his own United States Postal stamp. This was a significant moment for thoroughbred racing as it further demonstrated the importance and appeal of one the sports favorite sons as an American icon and a part of our nation's history.
In addition to the stamp there were several lesser known items which were offered in conjunction with the stamp and Secretariat.com is proud to offer these rare items to our loyal customers. Enjoy them individually or as set for their unique collectibility and investment potential - while they last!
Stamp Lapel PinThis very seldom seen pin is an exact portrayal of the stamp measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". The pin is backed in gold and has a toothed edge identical to the stamp. A perfect addition for every lapel pin collection! SOLD-OUT
Churchill Downs Cancellation CertificateOn November 20th, 1999, Churchill Downs racetrack hosted an unveiling of the official Secretariat Postal Stamp amid much fanfare and media attention.
What was truly unique about that day was that it was the only time the stamp was offered individually (normally, the stamp was only offered along with several other 33 cent stamps as part of a larger sheet that commemorated the great moments of the 70's). On that day it was arranged for the U.S. Postal Service to set up a temporary station on track to offer cancellations of the stamp on a special certificate produced for the event.
The Churchill Downs Stamp Certificate is gilded in gold and along with the actual stamp includes a photo of Secretariat in the winners circle following his record-breaking 1973 Kentucky Derby victory. It also includes the special gold-foiled cancellation showing the date as well as the Churchill Downs logo featuring the Twin Spires of Churchill Downs. This is the Churchill Downs logo that has since been replaced, making this item even more historical and unique in its collectibility.
Measuring 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" and signed by Secretariat's owner, Penny Chenery.
Stamp PosterAnother item that is rarely available, the poster measures 36" x 24" and shows an enlarged image of the Secretariat stamp on a black background highlighted with the words "Secretariat - Triple Crown Winner". Hand-signed by Mrs Chenery.
