An authentic shoe worn by deceased champion Unbridled. Unbridled's impact on the racing industry was felt both on the racetrack and in the breeding shed. The 1990 three-year-old champion earned $4,489,475 winning major races such as the Kentucky Derby, Breeders' Cup Classic and Florida Derby among others. Unbridled's Derby victory provided one of broadcast sports journalism’s most cherished moments when trainer Carl Nafzger called the race as it was run for elderly and near blind owner Frances Genter. As a stallion, Unbridled’s accomplishments were equally impressive. He sired 48 stakes winners and a phenomenal 10 millionaires including 1996 Kentucky Derby winner Grindstone, 2000 Preakness winner Red Bullet, and 2003 Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker. Unbridled's influence is carried on today through leading sires Unbridled's Song, Broken Vow, and Anees. A Claiborne Farm favorite, Unbridled is buried in the equine cemetery at Claiborne Farm.
The shoe was obtained from Claiborne Farm on September 28, 1998. The shoe rests on a solid walnut wood plaque with corresponding brass nameplate.
