In conjunction with the birthday anniversary of the "First Lady of Racing" Penny Chenery, we are proud to offer this special photo to this year's Vox Populi Auction.

Few photos capture the essence of the Secretariat legacy better than this photo of the charismatic chestnut colt and the pride and joy he brought to the Meadow Stable team. The select photo emanates from the private inventory of the Secretariat Archives and documents the historical moment immediately following Secretariat's victory in the Oct. 8, 1973 Man o' War Stakes at Belmont Park. The race marked Big Red's first venture racing on grass against a crackerjack field of accomplished older seasoned stakes horses. Not only did Secretariat win the race, he also established a new course record of 2:24 4/5 for the 1 / 1/2 distance in the process, once again confirming both his versatility and greatness.

The rich and colorful image captures Secretariat's owner Penny Chenery triumphantly leading Secretariat with jockey Ron Turcotte aboard to the winners' circle, while the adoring grandstand crowd clamors to catch a glimpse of their beloved champion. Unbeknownst at the time, the victory would also mark the last racing performance in which Turcotte would pilot Big Red (A minor racing infraction and subsequent short-term suspension would deny the Canadian-born rider from pairing with the super horse in Secretariat's final start 20 days later.) The photo also features Meadow Stable trusted groom Eddie Sweat along with Penny's husband Jack Tweedy as they share in the winner's walk.

The New York Racing Association photo represents one of the very few images signed by Ms. Chenery in which she is part of the composition. This particular photo is especially unusual as it was dually hand-signed by the "First Lady of Racing" along with Mr. Turcotte in blue ink - a rarity for their autographed images. The glossy photo is double-matted in a classic black hardwood frame measuring 16" x 13" in total and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Auction closes Feb. 17 at 8:30 p.m. EST
