An authentic shoe worn by Monarchos. When Monarchos streaked to victory in the 2001 Kentucky Derby he became the second fastest winner in the history of the Run for the Roses. The silver comet trained by John Ward blazed the 1 1/4 mile distance with jockey Jorge "Chop Chop" Chavez aboard in the final time of 1:59.97. A feat putting him in good company, only Monarchos and the great Secretariat ever broke the two minute barrier in winning the classic race. In addition to the Derby, Monarchos also won the Florida Derby and placed in the Belmont Stakes while earning $1,720,830 during his career. The young sire has produced over 63 winners to date.
The shoe was obtained from Claiborne Farm on October 28, 2003 by Claiborne employee Joe Peel. The shoe rests on a solid walnut wood plaque with corresponding brass nameplate.
