An authentic shoe set and halter worn by Academy Award. Academy Award, a regally-bred stakes winning son of Secretariat out of a Mr. Prospector mare, scored his largest victory in the 1991 Manhattan Handicap on the turf. Being a son of Secretariat with a proven aptitude for racing on grass, Academy Award was considered a prime stud prospect and retired to Claiborne following the Manhattan with career earnings of $221,003. As recently as 2006 Academy Award was one of only a few Secretariat sons still actively standing at stud.
The shoe set and halter were obtained from Claiborne Farm on August 27, 1998. The shoe set rests on a solid walnut wood plaque with corresponding brass nameplate. It is interesting to note that as a stallion Academy Award wore a bar shoe on his left front hoof. The leather halter with polished brass nameplate is in well-worn yet excellent condition.
